The team of students at SCAD Animation Studios had to cr eate a streamlined pipeline as well as custom tools with limited time and resources.\n\nThe pipeline was structured around Toon Boom Harmony for cle an-up, and The Foundry’s Nuke for lighting and compositing. In Harmony, ar tists cleaned up the animation and created masks for every overlapping sha pe, so lighting artists could work more efficiently later. \n\nA completel y custom 2D lighting toolset for Nuke, called “Pantheon”, was built specif ically for this film. With Pantheon, lighting artists could draw and anima te up to ten custom light passes, with each pass fully controllable in col or and opacity. Each shape of light and shadow was manually hand drawn and animated using roto-shapes. This toolset also had to be simple enough to use so that students who were unfamiliar with Nuke could easily pick it up .\n\nThe visual development team was also heavily integral in the process. Background paintings and color scripts had to be created prior to lightin g, so that lighting artists could use the color scripts as reference to in tegrate the characters into the background. \n\nHaving been created during the pandemic, this was a fully remote production bringing together SCAD s tudents from around the world with most living in either Asia and North Am erica. Through careful planning and collaboration, the students were able to bridge the continents and time zones to craft this film. \n\nWith “The Pope’s Dog”, SCAD Animation Studios shows that innovative techniques which push the boundaries of 2D animation can be achieved at the student level. \n\nRegistration Category: FULL ACCESS, EXPERIENCE PLUS ACCESS, TRADE EXHI BITOR\n\nFormat: IN-PERSON URL:https://sa2022.siggraph.org/en/full-program/?id=caf_343&sess=sess205 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
